CM/ECF Information

The Case Management/Electronic Case Filing System (CM/ECF) CM/ECF allows our court to accept filings and provides access to filed documents online. The system also offers the ability to immediately update dockets and download documents and print them directly from the court system.

All Attorneys are required to register online and confirm their information to receive access to the CM/ECF System.

General Information

Computer running on Windows or Macintosh;

Software to convert documents from a word processor format to portable document format (PDF). Adobe Acrobat PDF Writer, as well as certain word processing programs can perform this function. Adobe Acrobat 7.0 and higher meet the CM/ECF filing requirements. For viewing documents, not authoring them, only Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0 or higher is needed;

Internet access supporting a transfer rate of 56kb or higher;

CM/ECF Version 6.1 has been tested and works correctly with Firefox 15, Internet Explorer 9, and Safari 5.1/6 or later version;

Scanner to image non-computerized documents 400 pixels per inch (ppi);

Admission & CM/ECF Registration System

Lawyers admitted to the bar of this court, including lawyers admitted pro hac vice and lawyers authorized to represent the United States, must register for electronic filing in this district.

During the registration process, each Filing User will receive separate e-mail messages to verify his or her address and, if the applicant also seeks admission to practice, pay the required admission fee. Please acknowledge receipt by opening each message and following any instructions. Final confirmation of your registration will be sent separately at the conclusion of the process.

A PACER login is required to view any documents that have been filed electronically. Please visit the PACER website and complete the online form to obtain a PACER login and password.

Attorney CM/ECF Training Class Registration

The U. S. District Court for the Southern District of California offers CM/ECF Attorney Training. Classes are open to all attorneys, paralegals, legal assistants, or others who would be involved in performing or supporting the e-filing process. There is no cost to attend. You may register below to reserve your seat in one of the scheduled CM/ECF classes.

The two and a half hour hands-on training provides users with an interactive approach, as well as, step-by step instructions on how to navigate through the CM/ECF system. Topics include an overview of the CM/ECF system, e-filing a pleading and attachment, sealed civil filing, electronic civil case opening, maintaining your account and Policies and Procedures requirements.
