    Our Southern California major-league ballparks played host to brand-new U.S. citizens recently, as our federal district courts partnered with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to naturalize applicants at the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers stadiums.

    On Tuesday, October 15, 2019, the San Diego chapter of the Federal Bar Association will present Introduction to Federal Courts, an introductory level seminar geared toward recently admitted attorneys and those with little experience in federal court. The program features several panels of U.S. District Judges, U.S. Magistrate Judges, and judicial law clerks. The program also includes a presentation on federal jurisdiction and venue by James T. Wagstaffe and a presentation by the Clerk of Court, John Morrill. The panelists will include the Hon. Anthony J. Battaglia, the Hon. Barbara L. Major, and both civil and criminal practitioners.

    The United States District Court for the Southern District of California is pleased to announce that it has selected Frank J. Ragen as the first recipient of the Hon. David H. Bartick Award for Civility and Professionalism. Mr. Ragen has practiced for 46 years as a criminal defense attorney in the Southern District of California. Throughout his career, Mr. Ragen has conducted himself with a high level of integrity, civility, and professionalism that earned the respect of judges, prosecutors, and his colleagues.

    The United States District Court for the Southern District of California is pleased to announce the creation of the “Hon. David H. Bartick Award for Civility and Professionalism.” This award will recognize one individual per year who has demonstrated civility and professionalism in his or her practice of law. The annual recipients of the Bartick Award will have their names engraved on a permanent award displayed in the lobby of the Carter/Keep courthouse.

    Additional information about the award, including eligibility criteria and instructions for submitting a nomination, are attached. Nominations are due on or before July 12, 2019. The 2019 Bartick Award recipient will be announced at the October 10, 2019 State of the District Luncheon.

    U.S. Magistrate Judge Ruth Bermudez Montenegro and her law clerk Devin H. Mirchi, both front and center, led students in practicing civil discourse skills as jurors at the courthouse in El Centro, California.     Preliminary judging has been completed in the 2019 Ninth Circuit Civics Contest for high school students in the western United States, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. All told, over 1,300 young people entered the contest, which offers cash prizes and a chance to meet some of the nation’s preeminent jurists and legal practitioners.
