CONTEXT & COMMENTS

Def.: A judge appointed for an eight-year term by the U.S. district judges in a federal court to assist them. Magistrate judges handle matters assigned by statute as well as other duties delegated by the district judges.
       • The defendant consented to have his plea of guilty taken by a U.S. magistrate judge instead of by the assigned U.S. district court judge, who will adjudicate guilt and impose sentence at a later date.
