TERM

duplicitous

CONTEXT & COMMENTS

1) Def.: (said of a pleading, esp. an indictment) alleging two or more matters in one plea; characterized by double pleading.
       • "A duplicitous indictment is one that charges separate offenses in a single count. The overall vice of duplicity is that the jury cannot in a general verdict render its finding on each offense, making it difficult to determine whether a conviction rests on only one of the offenses or on both. Adverse effects on a defendant may include . . . the danger that a conviction will result from a less than unanimous verdict as to each separate offense." (U.S. v. Adesida)
2) Def.: (said of a person) deceitful; double-dealing
